TAX EXEMPTION BILL FOR IMPERIAL COUNTY TO BE INTRODUCED NEXT WEEK:
Tax relief may be on the way as Assemblyman V. Manuel Perez, D-Coachella, is set to introduce legislation early next week in response to the April 4, 7.2-magnitude earthquake.
The bill, set to be introduced Monday, would supplement a number of existing provisions that should be helpful to both individuals and local jurisdictions, according to a press release from Perez’s office.
The bill would backfill local governments for a temporary loss of property taxes due to property reassessments claimed by local owners, according to the release. It would also ensure that property owners still qualify for homeowner’s property tax exemptions if their main residence was temporarily damaged or destroyed.
“There are no silver bullets here — we’re talking about an estimated infrastructure damage assessment of $90 million,” Pérez said. “People’s lives have been interrupted, kids relocated to different schools, businesses shut down. We have no magic wand to make that go away, but what we can try to do is reduce the burden.”
Assemblywoman Mary Salas, D-Chula Vista, co-authored the bill, and Sen. Denise Moreno Ducheny, D-San Diego, is the principal co-author.
“This important bill will fill some of the holes in families’ and businesses’ wallets,” Ducheny said. “There is still plenty of work for us to do.”
STATEMENT BY ASSEMBLYMEMBER MARY SALAS ON THE EARTHQUAKE:
"My heart goes out to my friends, family and neighbors affected by the earthquake that hit the Imperial and Coachella Valleys on April 4. During this difficult time, I will be working hard with Congressman Filner, Senator Ducheny, and Assemblymember Perez to ensure that everything possible is done to help get people and businesses back on their feet. As an economic development specialist for California I worked hard to bring businesses and jobs to the area and I will redouble those efforts in the weeks, months and years ahead."
